What is Lip Blush Tattoo?

Lip Blush is a premium semi-permanent makeup procedure that enhances your natural lip. It can correct your lip shape and boost your lip colour, enhancing the natural beauty of your lips. This treatment delivers very natural results once healed. Lip Blush Tattoo can cut down on your make up routine each morning. It is waterproof, kiss proof, and long lasting! It give you an impression of fuller lip. It creates an illusion of fuller, plumper lips (note: this is not a lip filler).

In addition, colour correction can be done during a lip blush procedure. Depending on your concerns, we can correct areas in the lips where there may be a missing or dissolved border. We can also assist in correcting a scar in the area as well — you may want to have it blended nicely into your lip. There may be additional touch ups needed depending on your lip goals! Either way, we strive to get you to your desired outcome.

How long does lip blush last?

Lip blush can last 2-4 years after your initial touch up session.  Frequency of touch ups will depend on your lifestyle, health, skin and age. Some factors that cause the pigments to fade faster may include: smoking, teeth whitening laser after the lip blush tattoo, increased sun exposure, iron deficiency, or exfoliating lips too often. Most people choose to have annual touch-ups to keep their colour vibrant while others see no need for touch ups for 2+ years.

What is the healing process for Lip Blush services?

(See example reference photos below.)

  • Day 1: “I’m excited!” …immediately after the procedure: Lips experience swelling, tenderness and high colour intensity.
  • Day 2: “I look like a puffer fish, this colour and shape looks so dark!” Swelling usually subsides within 24 hours. Lips may appear darker than intended – this is normal! They will heal and become 40-50% lighter. Be patient!
  • Day 3-4: “The scabs are falling off, my lips are peeling and the colour is gone!” You will experience severe dryness, do NOT pick at scabs! This is part of the healing process, treat your lip tattoo like you would for any wound.
  • Day 5-7: “There is no difference! My lips are so pale and so uneven” After the flakes have naturally fallen off, your lips will appear lighter than expected. In the following weeks, the colour will surface and bloom into the intended colour.
  • Day 7-10: Ghosting stage. The colour looks very light!
  • Week 6-8: “The colour is coming back! I wish it was a little darker! I also see some small patches” Get ready to book your touch up appointment!
  • After touch up: “I love it! I want to come back for regular touch ups to keep my colour looking vibrant!”

Remember, everyone heals differently!

Some clients may experience healing a lot faster/slower than others, this is normal. This is simply a guideline to guide you through what to expect during your healing process.

Success of the procedure will depend on:

  • Skin care. Pre – appointment preparation, Post Treatment Care, exposure to liquids and sun — None of these factors are under the Artist’s control, thus providing any guarantee for the treatment is not possible.

  • Pre and post-care instructions are sent out in an email or text/IG confirmation when booking. It is the client’s responsibility to follow all instructions to ensure proper healing.

How often should I get a touch up?

A touch up is the final step of the lip blush procedure. The first touch up must be done 6-8 weeks after the initial procedure. Lips will be 50% – 60% lighter than they appear immediately after the procedure. Touch up sessions will make results last longer and we will go over any pigment loss that occurred during the healing process and fill any spots that did not retain pigment during the initial session.

Some clients choose to come for annual touch ups to maintain their desired colour or to change up their colour. Additional touch ups may be required depending on the person’s lifestyle, health, skin and age or simply to achieve the client’s desired look. Talking to your aesthetician will help you plan for your touch ups.

How many sessions do I need to get a desired lip colour?

It usually takes at least 2 sessions or more to complete your desired lip colour. The first initial appointment is neutralize your lip colour. After 6-8 weeks you will need to come back for a touch up. The body usually absorbs the pigment unevenly. A simple example that might be similar is like applying your nail colour — It needs at least 2-3 coats to achieve a solid colour.

Can I still have lip blush if I have a lip filler?

Yes, totally! Having the lip filler does not interfere with the lip tattooing process. To achieve the best result possible, we recommend that lip filler and lip blush appointments MUST be at least 4 weeks apart from each other.

Does it hurt?

Sensitivity varies from person to person, everyone has different pain tolerance. Clients who are anxious typically feel a bit more pain than a relaxed client. In addition, it is important to note that women on their period have an increased sensitivity to pain. Avoid drinking coffee or caffeine 24 hours before your lip blush appointment to prevent excessive pain and bleeding.

Topical anesthetic is applied before and during the whole procedure to minimize any discomfort. It is also very important to follow the pre-care instructions in order to feel the most comfortable and pain free throughout the procedure. At BBX we pride ourselves in client comfort. A good number of our clients have been so comfortable that they have fallen asleep during our procedure! We do our best to ensure you are comfortable.

How long does the appointment take?

Each lip blush session usually takes 2-3.5 hours depending on the colour of your lips, how big your lips are, and if you may be requiring any breaks. We value your comfort so we will not rush your appointment.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

  •  Make sure to exfoliate the lips a week to a couple days prior to your appointment for optimal results. You can do this at home with a drop of coconut oil and sugar to create your own sugar scrub. Dry lips cannot be worked on so it is important to stay hydrated and to moisturize your lips everyday. We recommend using Aquaphor!
  • 24-48 hours (1-2 days) before your appointment, make sure to avoid any type of blood thinner, including, but not limited to: Alcohol, coffee, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, Aspirin, Fish Oil, etc.
  • Please bring in your favourite lip gloss or lip colour; this is how we will make sure that your desired colour is matched without simply stating a “red” or “pink” colours, as this varies.
  • Always let us know your personal goals for your lip, and we will take care of the rest.
  • let us know if you are using any medications, please consult your doctor to ensure that it is ok to do the procedure as some medications may affect your lips during the healing process.
  • If you have had a history of cold sores we kindly recommend that you get prescriptive medications to ensure optimal healing for your lips.

As always, our goal here is to match YOUR goals! Please reach out with any further questions and let us know how we can get those goals met.

  • pools
  • excessive sweating
  • do not pick the scabs off your lips – just apply more Aquaphor!
  • do not apply anything else on your lips besides Aquaphor – please do this every 30 mins, or as needed when dry. You must keep you lips moisturized!
  • do not scrub or exfoliate your lips, do not use soaps with fragrances. Wash with fragrance free soap twice a day and gently dry with a tissue/napkin
  • avoid getting lips wet – drink with a straw
  • avoid the sun! Wear SPF on your lips, it will make the lip blush last longer. Sun exposure can alter the pigment of your lips and cause it to fade.

What do I need to do for Lip Blush after care?

First Hour: Pat the area with a clean tissue repeatedly

Days 1-3: Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor every 30mins-1hour. Keep lips moisturized at all times! No picking at scabs! Do not get it wet.

Days 1-7: Using your fingertips wash the area with warm water and mild unscented soap both morning and evening, only use a dabbing motion. Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive on the tattoo. Lightly dab with a paper towel to dry.

Avoid exercises, sweating, hot tubs, steam rooms, public pools, and the ocean during the first week.

Avoid direct sunlight for 2 weeks. Apply SPF 30 lip balm.

*** The client’s after care is 50% of the treatment’s success! Poor aftercare will result in additional touch up fees***

Why is working out not recommended?

  1. Infection – with sweat and bacteria you will be at higher risk of causing an infection
  2. Fading – especially during 1-7 days it is important to not work out because the sweat from your pores pushes out the pigment which leads to fading faster.
